We all have to be reminded from time to time there are always new things to learn. Mine came a few weeks ago as I had misinterpreted how a person is defined as disabled where the ADA is concerned. While it did not take my reasoning behind telling everyone (with a service dog) that they need some sort of record for their disability, the ADA does not share that need. I really had to eat some crow on this one...
I see the same with subjects like protection training on service dogs. I am firmly against it, there are just simply too many problems that COULD happen for me to justify doing something like that. There is a reason why so many groups strictly prohibit this action. But, as far as the ADA and service dogs go there is nothing to stop a person from doing so.
Recently I commented on REDDIT on a poster that was asking why the VA seemed to hate service dogs and asked wasn't the ADA federal law. Well, I responded that the VA does not have to follow the ADA. Actually, no federal agency has to. Well, this opened the gates of hate, reports were filed, and the mods ended up taking a comment of mine down, yea the one that simply said "The VA does not have to follow the ADA".
I followed up by appealing the mods' post removal based on the proof that my comment was fact using several government pages (Federal Register) and a couple of other sources. After 2 days I have heard nothing about it. I did go back to the same thread and reposted my proof for some of my biggest dissenters. But, still, they refuse to agree. So aggravating, I simply want to be able to teach and learn to/from others in the small service dog community. It is so important to me that everyone within our community knows and understands the service dog world.
But if anyone is interested in the government not having to follow the American Disability Act I have written a short article on it with links and all, you can find it HERE.
