Well, it seems like our local Winn Dixie decided to make it a pet-friendly grocery store today. I was tasked by the boss (my wife) to go to the local Subway to pick up a quick lunch and decided since I was close to the Winn Dixie that I should stop there also to pick up a couple of items, and to be honest I needed some more soda. I have fallen in love with the Dr. Pepper Cherry Zero Sugar, it is my new addiction.
Walking down the soda aisle Dougal and I hear the strangest noise from a few isles away. Almost a dog, but maybe not, just a weird noise. A lady turned into the aisle we were on and said "Oh, another dog". The noise continued but was turning into a bark. I asked her if there was another dog and pointed toward the sound. She told me "yes" and rolled her eyes. I told her that service dogs were not supposed to bark like that, as Dougal was very alert, but quiet. She said "Yes, I know. They should not be in here". I agreed and we got our drinks, the lady passed and told us "Thank you for your well-mannered pup". Point for us!
As we got to the meat counter here comes a couple with 2 (at least) ankle bitters in an enclosed pet buggy. They saw us and the buggy almost flipped over with the force the enclosed little foo-foo dogs hit the side fabric. Dogal did perfect and tucked behind me watching with unbridled interest of the self-moving buggy. The old couple that had been pushing the buggy had to fight to get the canine contraption back upright and moving down the aisle they were closest to. The barking continued for another full minute and then silenced.
After that we walked on another team. The dog riding between the handler's feet on one of those battery-powered shopping buggies. Her dog was awesome, staying on the floorboard and acting like a SD should. We ended up talking about our dogs for several minutes while waiting to check out.
