The 29th of March has come and gone! I am now unemployed. Seven years working for Labtech Diagnostics (Quest Diagnostics) and in the passing of the clock hands it has ended. I am surprised at the loss I feel. Expecting just a "whatever" emotion to pass over me, but it has been more like a true loss. I don't think it is due to losing the job, but more for the love I have shared with so many of the people I have had the honor to work with and learn from.
The laboratory was founded by a man from Syria and he brought many diverse people in to work within the lab. When I walked in and started to work there I was amazed at the different cultures that called this home now. Quickly, I learned to love these people and as luck would have it they were very open to sharing their differences with me. The feasts we would have where everyone would bring dishes of their countries and we would take a few hours to eat with one another. The grumpiness of the staff during Ramadan when they could not smoke their cigarettes during the day. The acceptance and questions when I would wear my kilt to work.
Good times, bad times, I really am going to miss them all with those people. It is not the company that makes a good place to work, it is those with which you work with. I pray that all of them can find their new path and only see success and happiness. So many were laid off just to make stockholders happy, with no thought of the people themselves. Just very sad!
Gladly I will be starting my new job next Friday and I am looking forward to it.
