Had to run to our local Winn-Dixie this morning to get some things for incoming suppers and for a friend of ours birthday. Normally we never have problems there as so many people know or see us there throughout the week. But I think the influx of the seasonal Snowbirds has changed the dynamic a little bit.
For a little bit of background, I have PTSD (combat-related) and my worst months are between October through March. So right now I am more on edge than during the summer months and suffer a lot of panic attacks and flashbacks, so Dougal has a lot more alerts, and he is good at them.
While we were looking through the birthday cards Dougal alerted. I had no clue, but he sensed a panic attack coming and jumped up to get my attention. I stopped what I was doing thanked Dougal and started breathing and grounding. Well, as I was doing this I had a lady come over and let me know that dogs should not jump up on people and that I should not have a dog in the store that would jump on people. Thankfully I was calmed down and not stressed out, I can get kind of rude when I am fighting my demons. I was able to look her dead in the eye and tell her that the dog was alerting me to a medical condition that was starting and then thanked her for her opinion and for inserting herself into business that did not concern her. She actually pointed her nose to the sky, snorted, and stormed off.
I later saw her talking to the store manager, who we know pretty well, and pointing in our general direction. Not sure what was said but her face turned a deeper red and stormed off from him. I saw the manager a short time later and apologized for the lady's action and he just laughed about it. He told us we were the only "team" he sees coming in regularly that he has 0 problems with.
