CAPE CORAL, Fla. —
A service dog is dead after being attacked by three pit bulls in northeast Cape Coral.
Three-year-old Zeta was more than a service dog to Jessica Asencio. The miniature pincher was her best friend.
"She would play, lick me on my face. I would snuggle her," Asencio said.
On Monday, Asencio took Zeta out to the backyard for their typical routine on Northeast 2nd Street. All of a sudden, she said three pit bulls came running at them and started attacking Zeta.
"The three pit bulls came. One grabbed my dog. I was screaming and crying for him to let go of her. 'Let go of her, let go of my dog!' And he didn't let her go," Asencio said.
Asencio did everything she could to try and save Zeta. That's why her arms are covered in bite marks, scratches and bruises. She eventually got Zeta back inside. Her family took Zeta to the veterinarian immediately, but sadly it was too late. NowAsencio hopes this is a lesson for others.
"Wake up people, please. Protect your dogs," Asencio said.
NBC2 reached out to Lee County. They say Animal Services is still investigating.
