MARYVILLE — Got Your Six Support Dogs has received a grant from the Disabled Veterans National Foundation (DVNF) for $22,000 to fund the training and placement of a PTSD service dog with a veteran as part of the group's Class of 2024.

"Gratitude knows no bounds as we extend our heartfelt thanks to DVNF for their generous donation, bringing hope and healing to a deserving veteran through the gift of a PTSD service dog," said Nicole Lanahan, executive director and founder of Got Your Six Support Dogs. "We're making a profound difference in the lives of those who have sacrificed so much for our nation."

Joseph VanFonda (USMC Sgt.Maj. Ret.), CEO of the Disabled Veterans National Foundation said, "The positive impact that a service dog can have on a veteran is profound. The work that Got Your Six Support Dogs is vital to the service members who need a partner in readjusting to civilian life. DVNF is proud to fund the incredible work they are doing."

Support for veterans

Disabled Veterans National Foundation exists to provide critically needed support to disabled and at-risk veterans who leave the military wounded —physically or psychologically — after defending our safety and our freedom.
DVNF achieves this mission by:
• Offering direct financial support to veteran organizations that address the unique needs of veterans, and whose missions align with that of DVNF.

• Providing supplemental assistance to homeless and low-income veterans through the Health & Comfort program and various empowerment resources.

• Providing an online resource database that allows veterans to navigate the complex process of seeking benefits that they are entitled to as a result of their military service, as well as additional resources they need.

• Serving as a thought leader on critical policy issues within the veteran community and educating the public accordingly

Healing power of dogs

Got Your Six Support Dogs (GY6) was founded in 2015 to provide service dogs to veterans and first responders suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury (TBI) and/or sexual trauma (MST).

The group's mission is to help these men and women regain their lives through the healing power of dogs. The GY6 vision is to reduce the number of suicides by veterans and first responders by training and placing more and more PTSD service dogs each year.

While it may be assumed that service dogs are available to anyone who needs one, the reality is that there are not enough to meet the demand.

At the same time, service dogs have been found to be extremely helpful for those who need assistance with managing and overcoming PTSD when all other methods of treatment have failed.

GY6 service dogs are trained to provide a variety of tasks to assist their partner such as helping individuals be alerted to their anxiety, recognize, and interrupt harmful behaviors, wake from night terrors, provide a sense of security, combat hypervigilance, retrieve items such as cellphones and keys, provide medication reminders, and reteach emotions such as love and affection.

In this way, GY6 can give something back to those individuals that serve our country.
