Getting a service dog at 30 almost ruined my marriage. Then, it saved it.

You make some very good points about expenses. One point not mentioned was pet insurance. The monthly premiums may seem excessive early on, but it can be extremely helpful in case of serious illness (or injury). Locked premium policies assist in budgeting.

Another tangential item is the price of the dog itself, though mostly in the case of self-training. Given two similar seeming dogs, it may be quite beneficial to spend more for a pup with certified genetics (hip, elbow, eye issues, etc) as the long term costs should be lower.

Hey! Welcome to the site! As for insurance, most companies just laugh at us. I have heard of a few that will pony up a little, HSA's that will allow the user to pull from money they have put in. I really doubt most companies have ever done a cost comparison between the drugs the user tasks versus what they may save with a service dog.
