TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) – Florida A&M University is partnering with the City of Tallahassee Animal Services in a joint program with FAMU Veterinary Technology students.
The partnership will provide vet tech students with hands-on experience by providing medical care and treatment for dogs at the city's animal shelter.
This treatment also increases the dogs' chances of being adopted.
Dr Rachel Barton is the chief vet for the city's animal services and says this program is a win-win.
"The fact that we have one of these programs here in town at an HBCU is amazing and we are so excited to work with them, the students get more hands-on experience, the dogs certainly benefit, and it really is like you are helping us too, they provide medical care for the dogs, which we might otherwise not be able to do here at the shelter."
The FAMU Veterinary Technology program can care for up to 8 dogs from the shelter.
There are currently 40 students studying veterinary technology for a bachelor's degree.
