Typically, a trained service dog will start out around $20,000 but normally you see them above $40,000. If you have read what is involved in training a service dog, I think you will start to understand why the price is so high. While the dog is in training the handler will see the dog very rarely till training is almost complete.
The handler only has to wait till the training has been completed and he/she has a fully trained service dog. Most companies have a grantee that the dog is ready so there is no worry that the dog will not work. Owner training there is a chance that the dog will not be able to complete the training.
The pretrained service dog may have a harder time bonding with their new handler. With the handler not there during most of the training there is not much to bond to. The owner trained service dog is with their handler almost 24/7 there is going to be a strong bond.
Time and training. Owner trainers must put tons of time into the training of the prospective service dog. Therefore, it typically takes so long for us to fully train. Professional trainers are just that. They know what they are doing and can quickly get things done where owner trainers tend to get stuck and must work through new things.
For me I love working (training) with my dog. But there are sacrifices that I have had to make. The bond Dougal and I share is truly awesome and when I see him sit or alert to me, I know that I did that.
